Johann Schmidt es Red Skull (Cráneo Rojo), un supervillano que aparece en los cómics publicados por Marvel Comics y su predecesor Timely Comics. Apareció en Captain America Comics #1 (marzo de 1941), creado por Joe Simon y Jack Kirby. Originalmente retratado como un agente nazi y protegido de Adolf Hitler durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Red Skull es considerado el archienemigo del superhéroe Capitán América. Inicialmente vistiendo una temible máscara de calavera de muerte sangre roja que simboliza la carnicería y el caos para intimidar, décadas después de la guerra, Schmidt sufre una desfiguración horrible que coincide con su persona después de una cadena de eventos que culminó en una pelea con el Capitán América.
